THE WIRED LAB is an artist led organisation evolving interdisciplinary art practices in rural Australia. We create opportunities for the research, production and presentation of projects that connect international and local artists with communities in new ways. Our curated programs and projects involve artists working from a regional context whilst producing outcomes of local and global relevance. Our activities range from skills development for young people, seniors, emerging and mid career artists, to the creation, presentation, publication and promotion of new works and major live arts projects.

Radio Roulette

ARTLANDS, 27th-30th of October 2016

Commissioned for the ARTLANDS Dubbo festival and projected to tour nationally in 2017/18. Radio Roulette is a wild, live non-stop event that attempts to understand the entire world through amateur radio. It provides audiences with the chance to meet HAM radio club members and make connections with others around the globe. Ham Radio is a movement established in over a century ago to communicate over radio waves. This pursuit of contact is unpredictable and championed by devoted hobbyists. Audiences watch connections happen live, as the Radio Roulette hosts gather local knowledge about each place of contact. Presented as either a durational work or a 45-minute show, audiences can participate in or simply witness the gripping pursuit of pre-internet communication.

Artists: Bron Batten, David Burraston, Jackson Castiglione, Sarah Last, Lara Thoms and Glen Walton in collaboration with members from the Wagga Wagga and Orana Region Amateur Radio Clubs.

Leah Blankendaal’s account of ‘Radio Roulette’ can be heard in this 5 minute radio program made for the national community radio network.
