ENVIRONMENTAL SOUND RECORDING MASTERCLASS WITH DOUGLAS QUIN (USA)

The Wired Lab presents leading field recordists and sound artists Douglas Quin (USA) and David Burraston as part of The Wild Lab 2018 in the Kosciuszko National Park wilderness area.

This four-day intensive field recording masterclass explores audio documentation in a range of natural habitats via various recording techniques and technologies, through to the application of these sounds in fields spanning the arts, film/screen, environmental sciences, museum installation, gaming, music and sound design.

 

EXPERIENCE

Masterclass participants will develop and hone skills in the areas of:

  • Field recording in a range of environments, from caves to the various bush, plain and alpine habitats within Kosciuszko National Park.
  • Technical operation of various location recording equipment in day and night time conditions.
  • Microphone techniques with contact microphones, hydrophones and parabolic reflectors.
  • Acoustic monitoring techniques for environmental science research.
  • Spatial audio recording techniques with spaced stereo microphones, surround sound arrays. Along with Ambisonic techniques using SoundField SPS200, Schoeps cardioid pair and Sennheiser mid-side (M/S) systems. We also have sponsorship from SoundField, who will be providing us with additional Ambisonic microphones.
  • Decoding techniques.
  • Exploration and demonstration of surround sound playback and multi-channel systems

Throughout the Masterclass there will be evening presentations, equipment demonstrations, listening sessions and critical analysis of the sounds collected and techniques explored.

Entry price includes transfers to/from Wagga Wagga, accommodation and all meals, (catering can be provided to certain dietary requirements (eg. Gluten Free, Vegetarian).

FIELD TRIPS
Each day we will explore the Kosciusko National Park and surrounds including:

  • Exclusive access to the network of caves within the Yarrangobilly precinct.
  • Exploring the wilderness of Kosciusko National Park via guided hiking excursions.
  • Informal opportunities to connect, network, relax, and learn informally from workshop facilitators and other participants.

LOCATION
Our base ‘camp’ is in the comfort of Yarrangobilly Caves 1917 House a beautiful heritage listed building. Participants will have use of the entire lodge, with either shared or single rooms available.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Anyone curious about or actively engaged in sound and field recording, spanning the arts, film/screen, environmental sciences, gaming, VR, music and sound design industries. Previous experience or study in these fields is desirable. This Masterclass is not a workshop for beginners.

UP TO 12 PLACES ARE AVAILABLE

Access
Masterclass participants will be working and hiking outdoors in various conditions, participants are advised to have a good level of fitness.

While access issues can be addressed in many cases, alternative activities may need to be arranged in some instances.
The NPWS has graded Yarrangobilly Caves House 1917 as level – hard.
Wheelchairs can access this area with some difficulty. Caves House 1917 has 1 wheelchair-accessible King suite.

DATE AND TIME

Saturday 15th December – Wednesday 19th December, 2018

TRANSPORT

Throughout the Masterclass The Wired Lab will have 4WD’s to transport participants.

If participants are catching public transport (train or plane) they will be picked up in Wagga Wagga at 12 noon on Saturday 15 December and taken to the ‘Wild Lab’ base camp in the Yarrangobilly Caves precinct.

It is highly recommended that participants arrive in Wagga Wagga the previous day or early morning on the 15th December to ensure timely pick up on Day 1 so we can commence the Masterclass at Yarrongobilly in the afternoon. The Wired Lab can provide accommodation recommendations in Wagga Wagga.

Participants returning via Wagga Wagga will leave the Yarrangobilly Caves precinct from 12 noon on Wednesday 19th December.
From Yarrangobilly to Wagga Wagga it is a 2-hour drive.

If you plan to drive, ensure you have a vehicle capable of negotiating the Snowy Mountains Highway and dirt roads. 2WD is acceptable but 4WD is preferable. The track in and out of Yarrangobilly Caves includes 6kms of steep and winding dirt road.

COST

From $2,450 – $2,800 AUD (GST inclusive)

UP TO 12 PLACES AVAILABLE

The cost includes:

  • Transfers to/from Wagga Wagga;
  • Accommodation and site access fees (at Yarrangobilly Caves House), all rooms have their own bathroom facilities;
  • Workshop tuition;
  • Meals (including breakfast, lunch, dinner and a daytime snack). Dietary needs such as Vegetarian and gluten free can be catered for on request.

Not included in the cost:

  • Your personal and equipment insurance;
  • Travel and accommodation costs to get to/from Wagga Wagga;
  • Alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks (The Wired Lab has sponsorship arrangements with local beer/wine companies which will be available for purchase). UV treated drinking water is available on-site for free;
  • Any additional snacks or food for highly specialised diets that we cannot cater for.

Accommodation recommendations for Wagga Wagga can be provided at time of booking.

Shared accommodation (8 places only)
A $350 discount is available to participants who choose to be accommodated in twin share rooms (total fee $2,450).

Single accommodation (4 places only)
If you prefer your own room, these are limited in number and will be provided on a first in first served basis. Cost is $2,800 inc GST.

Letters of Support
The Wired Lab is happy to provide letters of support for people applying for funds to attend the workshop. Please allow reasonable notice for these requests.

A fee of 50% of ticket price exists where cancellations occur within ten days of the event.

WHAT TO BRING

Recording equipment
Bring any audio recording equipment you use in your own field of work.

It is essential that you pack for all situations and weather.

Gear
Please include:

  • Good walking/hiking boots, preferably waterproof;
  • Waterproof backpack;
  • Waterproof clothing and hiking gear;
  • Long pants and long sleeves tops for times you might need sun/mosquito protection and/or be walking through long grass;
  • Water bottle;
  • Mosquito repellent, sunscreen and a hat;
  • Nicotine patches, if you smoke; (Please note: There is no smoking permitted inside the National Park)
  • Any medication such as hay fever/allergy medication or necessary prescription medication. Please notify The Wired Lab if you have any severe allergies.

We highly recommend you visit the NSW Bushwalking Association website for more advice on being prepared.

Insurance 

If travelling from overseas it is essential you take out comprehensive travel insurance prior to attending the Masterclass. Please ensure it provides adequate cover for both you personally and for any equipment you may be bringing with you.

The Wired Lab will not hold insurance for your equipment and gear. It is the participant’s responsibility to take out such insurances.

THE MASTERCLASS FACILITATORS

DOUGLAS QUIN (USA)

Douglas Quin, Ph.D., is a world-renowned sound designer, naturalist, public radio commentator, music composer, who currently teaches in the Television, Radio and Film Department at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Over the past three decades, Doug has become known as one of the true renaissance men of the soundscape world. His sound works run the gamut from naturalistic portraits of place to electroacoustic explorations based on natural sounds to jazz, choral works that are rooted in the ways of the sounding world. He’s produced museum sound design for projects ranging from the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History, American Museum of Natural History and the Polish Academy of Sciences, among others. His sound design has also been featured in Werner Herzog’s Academy Award nominated documentary, Encounters at the End of the World, Jurassic Park III, and the game/world Spore.

He has traveled widely documenting the natural soundscape—from Antarctic ice to Arctic tundra and from African savannah to Amazon rainforest. Quin’s recordings of endangered and disappearing habitats represent one of the most unique and extensive collections anywhere. His pioneering work has received recognition and support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Science Foundation (including two coveted fellowships to join scientists in field stations in Antarctica).

DAVID BURRASTON

David is an artist and scientist who has been involved in audio-visual technology and electronic arts of sound since the late 70s. He has worked with collaborators such as the ALIVE (Artificial Life Interactive Video Environment) project from MIT Media Lab, and many artists including Aphex Twin, Garry Bradbury, Alan Lamb, and Chris Mann. David has given a number of guest lectures at Universities and international conferences. He is a founding member of the Electronic Music Foundation Institute.

Dave’s music has been released to critical acclaim on labels such as: Entr’acte, The Wire Magazine, Alku, Important Records/Cassauna, Taiga, Computer Club, Gamma Mine, .Meds, Cataclyst, Engraved Glass, Tochnit Aleph, Sevcom Edition and many others.

In 2017 David was awarded a prestigious Regional Artist Fellowship from Create NSW. The fellowship included collaborations with Chris Watson (UK), Douglas Quin (USA), Jez riley French (UK), Aphex Twin (UK) and residencies in EMS Stockholm, MOOG Sound Lab (UK), University of Hull (UK) and Syracuse University (USA).
